Rain does not replace a wash. Road splash, dirt and drying water can leave a film on paint and glass. A measured cleaning routine is more useful than repeatedly wiping a dirty car dry.
Rinse away loose contamination first
Dragging a cloth over gritty paint can introduce wash marks. Start by removing loose dirt with an appropriate rinse, then use suitable wash products and clean equipment. Work on cool surfaces where possible.
Pay attention to drying water
Minerals and contamination left as water dries may create spots. Do not immediately reach for an abrasive household cleaner. A detailer can help distinguish fresh deposits from marks that may have affected the finish.
Protection still needs washing
Wax and suitable coatings can support maintenance, but neither means you can ignore road film or bird droppings. Follow the aftercare advice for the product already on your vehicle before adding another product over it.
Use covered parking thoughtfully
Shelter can reduce exposure, but trees may bring sap and droppings. If a cover is used, check that it is suitable and that the vehicle and cover are clean; rubbing a dirty cover against paint can cause marking.
If your paint looks dull after a wet spell, begin with a careful wash and inspection. Buffing is not the automatic first answer to every patch of residue.
